[WTF is a weekly opinion article in which Amy Killin shines the spotlight on something peculiar or shocking in the world of film and gives you, the reader, a chance to chime in with your two cents.]
Sad news in the week just passed, as film fans with an interest in the behind the scenes of moviemaking were shocked with the news [...]
This week’s WTF Wednesday comes in the form of a poke at the ‘Twitter Effect’ and why something that sounds so silly has Hollywood media researchers in some serious denial. By now, you’ve all heard of Twitter and the way it provides people with rant space – in 140 characters or less – to pave the way for celebrities and kids-locked-in-their-bedrooms alike, to have their say. In terms of responding to movies, the so-called ‘Twitter Effect’ occurs when a movie is released and people talk it up on the website, generating hype or negativity that has potential to influence a flick’s box-office run. But in a story noted by The Wrap, research company Ipsos OTX MediaCT has reared its head to report to Hollywood (and probably the world via their Twitter account) on their findings: of 24,000 surveyed film fans, only 1% use Twitter to recommend or comment on movies.
What comes to mind when you hear the words “Aussie” and “Horror Movie” together? Now just because I’m talking Australian Movies, don’t scoff! Aside from Baz Luhrmann’s penchant for using a trip to the movies to feed every foreigner’s outback fantasy and Stuart Beattie’s big spend on Tomorrow When the War Began, it has been Aussie horror that has not entirely alienated us, from the film fans of the world and even ourselves. Successful ones, at that.
Zero gravity shootouts, chaotic car chases and mammoth explosions that would make Michael Bay green with envy. Yes, the new Sci-Fi thriller Inception is your typical Hollywood blockbuster.
Only it’s not.
Hidden somewhere beneath all that fandangle action lies something studio executives would usually hiss at while clutching a crucifix; a clever plot. Few films have one nowadays, possibly due to the word [...]
With the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony just under two weeks away, the movie blogging community is going rabid with their predictions. Here at Cut Print Review, however, we’ve kept quite on the subject, as down here in Australia we don’t get to see many of the Oscar nominated films until the weeks leading up to the ceremony, and often, after it. Now that I’ve had a chance to see most of the films nominated, I thought it was about time to chime in with my predictions.
Yes folks, it’s that time of year again – awards season in Hollywood has well and truly kicked off! The first of the major awards shows in the lead-up to the Oscars is the Golden Globes, a night to celebrate achievements in both film and television for the last year. The combination of stars always makes for an interesting red carpet – those that were utterly gorgeous, those that were ok but not quite there, and those that really make you wonder what people think when they look in the mirror!!
