This is a complex story about two or three complex characters. The film works brilliantly in places, but fails to work as a whole, because, in my opinion, the director seems to have become too closely connected with the book.
A book is a book, a play a play, a poem a poem and a film is a film, one can not make a film work as the book worked, one must make a film of the book and this requires a transformation of ideas from one medium to the other.

The main actors worked very well, worked very hard to sustain and develop their characters and Malcowitz and Haines achieved the greatest success with this; some almost achieved similar success, whilst other characters were left to flounder or evaporate as they were too thinly drawn or presented without grounding, in fact, many times (especially early on in he story) the script was far too sparse to sustain the story by itself and the absence of good grounding left the story to wander and wave around in the ether like segments of a dream selected at random. More than once or twice, the story lacked credibility because of poor directing technique and sloppy attention to obvious and important logical detail. It is a great pity that this film could not have been used as a production exercise, from which lessons could have been learned and ultimately a brilliant film have been crafted.
