Been meaning to comment on this for a while... I was surprised at the level of gore in this film - even as a female I'm not opposed to a bit of blood and guts, but it just didn't seem necessary for the most part here.

I was going to review the film (after all, I got free tickets so no money was wasted) but then I read this and it was pretty much what I would've said but better. I love 24 and think Kiefer Sutherland is a great actor but I kept thinking 'Jack Bauer!' throughout the whole thing... and the wife WAS horrible, just so whiny and fake and annoying! Admittedly there were one or two jumps (I felt them more from surrounding viewers) but the plot was so stretched that it could've easily been cut by 20 minutes and probably still seem like forever.

I'm not the hugest modern horror fan, but Mirrors was a slight letdown. Even the beginning sequence - has my memory gone or did his face being ripped apart look so unreal it wasn't funny?

I'm not opposed to gore in general, 28 Days Later and The Descent are two of my favorite movies, and they're very bloody. It's when a horror film tries to use the lack of plot, or narrative, or acting/directing skills by spraying blood in every direction (i.e. the Saw series, Roth's Hostel, etc. etc.).

I gave it 2 stars merely because I do get a kick out of Sutherland wielding a gun... That and there were some nice little cinematographic tricks early on, before the poorly executed CGI conclusion.

But your right, it really doesn't deserve 2 stars in hindsight! I must have been feeling generous.

There are instances where i think gore is tolerable, but only when it is incorporated within a film that connects it's characters with the audience and has a script that is gripping and suspenseful. Take Wolf Creek or, my guilty pleasure of the year, The Ruins. Both were certainly brutal in parts, but I genuinely had a connection with the characters and their plight which in turn, made the gore almost seem necessary to the story.

That being said, be careful before having a condescending attitude towards the gory films of today (I am telling you, commentators above me, yes you!) for they are going to become the cult tradition of tomorrow. It's easy to follow the pattern that brought zombie films, slasher series and many other B-flicks to where they are today.

"Plot wise, these visuals are completely unnecessary and, unlike Eli Roth's Hostel or the seemingly never ending Saw series of films, it doesn't occur consistently enough to be the sole reason why the film exists."

I can't oppose this argument though.
