i completely agree with you i also think that gus van sant oversimplifies every history he makes a movie of, elephant is one of the worst, followed by "last days", and the worst thing is that he always chose the most complicated characters the ones that nobody understand, and turn them understandable by taking away all that makes them important, again elephant and last days are good examples of that

A thorough and commendable essay that captures the essence of the film and the man. While I agree with Anil on Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR was my own #2 movie of the year behind WALL-E) I do think Penn was far better than OK, a fact that you Anders asserted in your fecund piece. I like the examination of Van Sant, particularly the parellels with ELEPHANT, his best film. And I agree the film grows on you. It may not have been the most successful psychological biopic, but if it has it would have compromised the conscious decision to paint Van Sant as the 'symbol' of a movement. Again, excellent work here, and an opinion I wholeheartedly concur with.

At first, I totally agreed with you Anil; the film did seem to simplify certain aspects, and opt for mainstream appeal in areas which is somewhat unlike Van Sant of late. Yet I sat on this review for a while, and the more I did, the greater the impact of the film was. It stuck with me like few films have of late, especially when I least expected it to, and that's a great deal why I gave this film such a good wrap.

And whilst I thought Sean Penn was truly brilliant; like you said, there are more deserving Oscar nominees this year.

Thanks for your comment!
