No it's not Eastwoods best, but I was just so taken by the story I found myself glued for the entire film. It was thoroughly entertaining, but not exactly awards material.

As you rightly note Jolie's performance loses steam (if fact she is a veritable crying-machine, whose nomination for Best Actress was underserved when you realize both Sally Hawkins and Kristen-Scott Thomas, and even the Russian actress in Sokurov's ALEXAXANDRE were bypassed, not that the latter had one chance in a million) and some jarring flashbacks violate the delicate tone of the film. It's fine, but certainly not among Eastwood's more memorable achievements. Again, you write with style and insight, and your opinion has support in the critical ranks.
