As someone who has seen all of the original series (and the movies, but those aren't worth mentioning for the most part - especially not in relation to this movie), I found myself wishing that I had gone in as a Star Trek newbie. What defined Spock for me in the original series was his detached maturity. Based on this movie Spock must have matured A LOT in the intervening years. I kept having to think to my self, "Well, he's supposed to be a lot younger, right? So maybe he hadn't figured himself out by the time he was an instructor at Starfleet Academy?". I really thought that Quinto did an amazing job with the role he was given. He had some truly awesome moments. I just had too much, well, can we use the work foreground as opposed to background?, going into the film to really believe that he was Spock.

The rest of the characters I found beleivable, with the small exception of Cho as Sulu. He seemed pretty sullen at times and tame for most of the rest of it, and Sulu was never sullen. That said, I'm okay with him re-inventing the character for this alternate universe. I feel similarly about Pegg's Scotty. I loved him in the movie. I'm not quite sure yet if he's Montgomery Scott, but they'd definitely get along in a pub. The characters and relationships in general seem to have been modernized for this movie - which is probably all to the good.

I agree with the review that the realtionship between Spock and Uhura seemed thrown in. Aside from the fact that it didn't seem to really add anything (except getting Uhura more screen time), Spock was her instructor, for heaven's sakes! I just can't imagine Spock doing something as immoral as getting into a relationship with a student. That was definitely a big factor that hinderred my suspension of disbelief.

As a final "What?!" moment in the movie, I saw our villains and went, "Those are supposed to be Romulans?" In general, they seemed to go more over the top with the aliens (a la Star Wars) that is usual for Star Trek.

Even with all that, I thought it was a good movie. It was mostly carried by great acting, but I'd certainly rather have that than a great plot carrying mediocre acting. I think I need to re-watch it a few times (like, 10) while trying to let go of my Star Trek baggage. As I said, I really think I would have enjoyed it more if I'd never seen Star Trek before. Currently giving 4/5.
